Javanese literature since independent
This anthology aims to give a cross-section of javanese literature during
the third quarter of the 20th century. A truly representative anthology
faithfully reflecting every aspect of the literary life of such a long period
is difficult to achieve, if only because of the limitations imposed by the
quantity and nature of the material to which the compiler has access and
the space available, not to mention the influence of the compiler's personal
views and tastes. It seems appropriate, therefore, to give an account
ofthe main principles adopted in the compilation of the present book.
An attempt has been made to hring together examples of all the different
literary genres represented during the period under survey: in the
first place such modern genres as the novel, the short story, poetry and
drama, but also the more traditional forms of literature, written as weIl as
oral, such as macapat verse and wayang kulit, wayang wong, ke!oprak,
ludrug and kentrung texts. Some space has also been reserved for songs,
both modern and traditional, although some cri tics may object to the
classification of such 'trifles' as literature. In the field of modern prose
and poetry examples have been given of the work of same of the more
prominent authors, while samples of the work of Ie ss significant writers
have also been included, depending on the form and contents of the texts
concerned.
